Spawning tanks
You might be interested that there is a bit of debate going on in the “betta parents world” over the size of tank that will be used in spawning. Before spawning however, you must make sure that your male and female pet betta fish are separated. This will ensure that there would be a bit of excitement on their part in waiting for the precise moment of their breeding session. You need to let them rest, eat much protein and gather strength for that BIG ENCOUNTER.
You need to purchase a 5-gallon spawning tank. I recommend this because it is cheaper to buy a smaller tank. Aside from this cost consideration, a close quarter will certainly make it easier for your bettas to make a connection. With a smaller tank they will not fritter away much strength in running around as the female teases his prospective mating partner.
You might as well consider buying an aquarium heater during the spawning period. You must make sure that the temperature is set to 80 degrees. Once you have an 80 degrees stable temperature for a period of 3 days, then your fish are now ready to start the game.
There is one important thing you need to know in setting up your spawning tank. Spawning tank differs in one fundamental way from other tanks because it is not advisable to put some gravel at the bottom. The reason behind this is pretty clear, when a fry goes down to the bottom, your male betta wouldn’t have even the slightest difficulty in bringing it back to the bubbles nest if there is no gravel to hide in it.
As a final tip, do not allow your spawning tank to go through the process of cycling because you might not know that you may lose some fry when you change the water. As a bonus, I will share with you this cheap yet effective trick in getting good bacteria into your tank. At least a week before spawning, simply buy a small sea sponge and place it in your main betta tank. After the given period, transfer it to the spawning tank and this way you can expect good bacteria to dwell with your bride and groom, thus saving you to the need of water cycling.
